Cute MINI Waffles! DASH mini waffle maker review
Who doesn't love waffles? The only thing that might be better is a mini waffle, right? After seeing this mini waffle maker pop up on sale all over the place during this holiday season I just had to get one and try it for myself. My review and tips for perfect waffles is below!
So what is this waffle maker? This is the Dash mini waffle maker that can be found in most major retailers including Target and Kohls. The normal retail is around $15-$20 but I was able to get this for less than $10 on sale.
This waffle iron can make you single serving mini waffles that are about four inches in diameter in just a few minutes. This is pretty straightforward to use, but I have some great tips to help you get the perfect waffles.
Firstly, the batter. The waffle maker comes with a booklet of recipes but any waffle recipe works. I use Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Protein pancake mix. I simply add 1/2 c. of the mix to a little less than 1/2c of water and add some mashed banana, about 1/4 -1/3 of a ripe banana. I use the banana to replace the oil in the waffle recipe and you don't miss it al all! I also add a little less water than recommended because I like my batter on the thicker side. I like to mix it in a measuring cup for easy pouring.
Next, heat up your waffle maker. Just plug it in an wait a minute or two until the light stops glowing. It will turn on an off throughout the cooking process as it regulates the temperature. Do not worry about this at all after the initial warm up.
After it is warm, spray your waffle maker with cooking spray, I put it on a plate to catch any extra spray. Even though it is non-stick you really need to spray between each waffle to get the best result. then, simply pour your batter in, I recommend filling it about 3/4 of the way until it is mostly full but there is a small ring of empty space around the edges. As with all waffle makers you need to get used to the maker to know how much batter to use. When it doubt, just use less so it will not be messy. If you use too much the batter will overflow the edges. Also, if you notice the top part separating from the bottom during cooking (they should just lay flat together on their own) that is a sign you added a little too much batter.
Now, how long should they cook for? There is no built in timer but there are two things you should look for that I have discovered through observation. Firstly, I have found the waffles take around three minutes to cook. Secondly, after you add the batter and close the top it will start to steam and after three minutes the steaming stops completely or with just a few wisps of steam. This is when your waffle is done. Do not lift the lid before this! It will undercook your waffle! They should be nice and golden brown like these.
Now for some tips! My number one tip is to practice the amount of batter to put in. Your first try is always going to look a little weird or overflow or something this is ok; you will get the hang of it!
Second, always spray your maker! Always!
Thirdly, do not peak at the waffle until after 3 minutes until it stops steaming!
Fourthly, if you want your waffles to stay crispy let them cook on a wire rack instead of putting them straight on plate.
These are also perfect to make and store for later in the freezer. You can then pop them in the toaster to heat up to eat on the go! My favorite way to eat them though is with a peanut butter drizzle which i make by combining 2 T of peanut butter powder, 2 T of water, a pinch of salt and some sugar or artificial sweetener. Yum!
I have this waffle maker, and though you need to oil it the first time couple of times you use it, if you just wipe it out with a paper towel before you put it away, soon you never have to oil it again. This is true with most waffle irons, even the old ones. They become ‘seasoned. The trick is to NEVER use SPRAY!! Just put some neutral flavored oil on a paper towel OR apply with a brush. And no soap and water!
