Review and Swatch: Milani Lipgloss (Mystery!) Maybe Brilliant Shine Mauve Fetish?

So, I was at the dollar tree and picked up several make up items including this lip gloss from Milani. On the packaging though it said “liquid lip stick”. When I got it home and tried it out, it became obvious that it was just a regular lip gloss. It is a very pretty color though and quite pigmented so I went online to try and find it, but to no avail.
Does anyone know what this lipgloss is? Or how old it is? It looks kind of like Milani Brilliant Shine gloss in mauve fetish, but the packaging is quite different.

It’s a very pretty, medium pigmentation, mauve lip gloss with no shimmer or sparkle. It also has a strong vanilla scent.

Review: Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara

I’m constantly intrigued by designer mascaras. What makes them so fantastic and different? What about the brushes, the formula? So whenever I have the chance to try one out in sets or samples I’m always excited. I recently received the Marc Jacobs new Velvet Noir Mascara from Influenster. I was given this free to review, but all opinions are my own.

Review and Swatch: Maybelline Color Tattoo Pigments, 35 Breaking Bronze

The Maybelline color tattoo pigments debuted in I believe 2013 and were about $7. And, as it is with many cosmetics, they have now trickled down to the dollar tree due to discontinuing.  There were a few shades available but I just picked up 35: Breaking Bronze.

Review and Swatch: Wet n Wild Fall 2015 Mega Last Lipstick in Photobomb and Vintage Vibe

Back in August 2015, I had heard of the annual wet n wild fall line which is always quite good, especially the last couple years. So, needless to say, I went out searching for it but could not find it. So, you can imagine my surprise when I went out to the drugstore the day after black Friday and saw the whole set there. I only picked up the two lipsticks that looked the most interesting to me: Photobomb and Vintage Vibe.

Review and Swatch: MN Menow Generation ii liquid lipstick in 30 and 18

When will my love for these ever stop? I really do not know. I have been wearing my other Menow lipsticks quite a lot so I decided to pick up a few other colors, which will probably be my last. The colors were:

Review: E.L.F. studio line small stipple brush

I love all e.l.f studio line brushes. I love them, a lot. If I could own three of every brush, I would. Recently I added a new brush to my collection: the Small Stipple Brush. I bought this because I heard it was good for applying cream blush and highlighters which I have been struggling with for a while.
The small stipple brush is about an inch in diameter with duo colored bristles. It is soft and flexible, but dense. It is good for both stippling product and buffing it in.

It is true when people say this is good for cream blushes and highlighters, in fact, it has started a craze in me for cream products. Now I want to try out their HD blushes. To apply cream blusher I simply tap the brush into the product, stipple it onto my cheek, and then buff it in to my desired strength. The a liquid highlighter, I apply some to the back of my hand, press my brush into it, and then stipple and blend onto my cheekbones.

Overall, I am very happy with the quality and usefulness of this brush. I am finally able to apply my cream and liquid products with ease and I also feel this would be great for foundation! I bought this for $3 at Target.

Review: Eco Tools Detailed Lip Brush

After the resounding that was the Sephora lip brush, I decided to check one out from a cheaper, but well loves, brand. I chose the detailed lip brush from eco tools which retails for around $4.
I picked up the brush at my local Ulta. While it doesn’t retract is does come with a metal lid that can cover the bristles. I find the bristles to be softer and less “plastic” than the Sephora brush. This leads to more product on the brush. It is still and dense and firm brush though.  It sheers out the product a bit on the lips, but leaves no streaks or uneven edges.

The cap has one flaw and that is it is not secure. There are no bumps and holes to “click” the cap on, so it can fall off. I’ve never had this happen in my purse yet (I keep in in a small, vertical pocket) but if you just have this floating around the bottom of your bag I can see it falling off.
size comparison

Overall, I find this to be a good drugstore brush. For only $3.99 you get a streak free application of lip color that is also cruelty free and uses recycled materials. Is the my “holy grail” brush? Well, no. I will still be on the lookout for another, better brush. For now though, this is my best option.

Review and Swatch: Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick in Bare it All 902c

Lately I’ve been really getting into nude makeup products like nude nail polish and nude lipstick. AS per usual, one of the first places I look for such products is from Wet n Wild. I’m honestly just slowly accumulating all of their products. This time, the product I bought was a lipstick from the Megalast line in the color Bare it All.

Review and Swatch: OCC Lip Tars in Vintage and Lydia

As many people know by now, OCC has stopped selling their traditional tube lip tars and can no longer be found at Sephora. Instead, they now sell their Ready To Wear (RTW) line from their online store. This is disappointing because I would love to be able to buy them at Sephora (let’s just hope they are in a transitional phase and will start selling at Sephora again soon) but, this also meant that the lip tars were on sale. Because of this sale, I was able to pick up two colors I have been wanting for a long time: Vintage and Lydia. (This also meant that I wasn’t able to get the color that is now sold out and not part of the RTW line: Rollergirl)

YSL Rouge Pur Couture Review and Swatch

Just a few weeks ago I got the best surprise ever from influenster, I had been chosen to participate in the YSL rouge our couture box! Influenster has done a few YSL boxes in the past that I had never been chosen for, but in my opinion, this was the best one so far! In my box there were two lipsticks from the rouge our couture line:

Review and Swatch: Wet n’ Wild Megalast Lipsticks in Rose-Bud and Coral-ine

Both of the colors I will be reviewing and swatching today are either hard to find or discontinued. I have not been able to find them anywhere, and some posts on line claim that these are discontinued. I have no idea if this is true though.  Both appear on the Wet n’ wild website though.  I was only able to find these at Kmart, so if you have been trying to find these shades, I’d check there.

Review and Swatch: Maybelline Long Wearing Lipstick in Red Spark

The last time I went to my local Dollar Tree (where everything’s a dollar) I went to check out their make-up section where you can sometimes find brand name cosmetics in addition to their basic L. A. Colors and other cheap cosmetic brands. This time there was some E.L.F. , some “vintage” Wet n’ Wild nail polishes, some sinful Colors and a few of these Maybelline Lipsticks. Some of the tubes were not labeled with their color and some were soft plum, but most were this color: Red Spark. Not only this color, but this entire line must be discontinued. Searching it on the web all I can find are ebay and such websites reselling these.

Review and Swatch: Nyx Soft Matte lip cream in London

Let’s just say after I got my first few Nyx Soft Matte Lip Creams I just had to pick up another. I’m also having this really weird nude phase? Like, I never used to like nudes in nail polish or lip color and now I’m going crazy and buying them? And really like wearing them? Well, that’s how I came to pick up London (though being named after my favorite city didn’t hurt).

Review and Swatch: Maybelline Baby Lips Electro in 80 Berry Bomb

Recently I received this product as a surprise gift from Vocalpoint which is a website that shares recipes, product reviews and more. This Electro collection is a relatively new collection for the Baby Lips line as is based on very bright colors and have very cool neon on black packaging.

Berry Bomb is a dark purple balm that comes off as a sheer bright purple/pink when swatched. On the lips it serves to even out the tones of my lips. It has a candy-like berry scent.

I find this one to be less greasy and almost “thicker” feeling on the lips which I like better than the original.

Like all baby lips this doesn’t give strong color especially on those with quite pigmented lips. This is decently moisturizing and I do like it better than the original. This runs around $3.50 at most store.

Review and Swatch: Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo and Ibiza

Even as I heard Nyx was releasing a new matte lip cream, I had still not tried their original formula! So, as soon as I could get a decent sale, I picked up a few of the original soft matte lip creams and, I have to say, I need to pick up some more!

Review and Swatch: Almay liquid lip balm in Apricot

Once again the newspapers gave us a $4 off Almay coupon which I used to acquire another liquid lip balm, this time in a nice orange shade.
Apricot is a medium slightly pinky orange shade.

Like all of the liquid lip balms is a sheer color that must be reapplied every hour or so because it either dries or rubs off. Since I have fairly pigmented lips this just turns my pinkish lips a bit coral-y. I have owned this for a while now, and it’s definitely not a product I reach for often at all. It is not very moisturizing even though it claims to be a balm and doesn’t give enough color for my liking.
The product had a noticeable vanilla scent. The packaging is cute and basic; the applicator is a doe-foot.

Overall, it’s not a horrible product, so if you are fond of tinted lip glosses then this might be something you would like. If you are hoping for something longwearing, moisturizing, or full of pigmentation, then you would be disappointed. This product normally retails for $4.47 at Walmart.

Review and Swatch: MAC Good Kisser Matte Lipstick (Limited Edition)

It is not often that I go to my local CCO, (the Cosmetic Company Outlet, a legitimate reseller of such brands as MAC, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, etc. at a discount often found in outlet complexes) but when I do I always find some winners. Today, I will be reviewing one of my finds, MAC lipstick in “Good Kisser”!

Review and Swatch: Wet n’ Wild Megalast Lipstick in Don’t Blink Pink

While I picked up my “coral-ish” Hot Paris Pink lipstick I also picked up this one since Wet n Wild was “Buy one get one free”. This is another of the megalast line of which I have about 10 lipsticks. I really do like this line a lot and this color is no different!

Review and Swatch: MAC Nightmoth Lip Pencil

When I last headed to my CCO (cosmetic company outlet, a legitimate reseller of MAC and other brands) I picked up a few things. One of these was MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth. Nightmoth is a permanent color for MAC which just shows CCO’s often stock both limited edition and permanent products!

Review: Birchbox June Unboxing

I’ve been interested in getting a subscription beauty box for a while, but have been debating the price verses what you get in a box in addition to the “surprise” factor. So, when there was a code to get a Birchbox (one of the most popular subscription boxes) for only $1, I decided to pick it up!
This is the Birchbox June box whose theme was “Adventure.” Birchbox normally retails for $10.

Review and Swatch: E.L.F Baked Highlighter in Moonlight Pearls

Highlighting has become a very big and mainstream trend in the past few years, but I have been hesitant to spend a lot of money on highlighting products. I do have a cream highlighter (Watt’s Up from Benefit) that I got as part of a kit, but I don’t use cream highlighters (or any cream products) often because of how much powder I use. So, I wanted a powder highlighter that wasn’t too pricey. Ever since E.L.F came out with their baked highlighters I have wanted to try them. Unfortunately, they never came in stock to any stores that sell E.L.F. near me. So, when E.L.F. had a free shipping with no minimum promotion I picked one up.

Recipe: DIY Chia Juice Drink

I really like Mamma Chia drinks, the unique texture is great and I feel it really fills me up, like a snack! But, they are pretty expensive to buy regularly. The concept of the drinks seemed pretty basic to me, so I went online to see if there was a recipe for making this on you own. I found this recipe http://www.mamanatural.com/how-to-make-your-own-chia-seed-drink/ and I have to say, it really works!
The recipe:
Chia drink ingredients
1 cup of the juice of your choice
1 cup water
3 TB chia seeds
How to make your own chia drink
Warm your water, put in a cup and add your 3 TB of chia seeds. Stir well till the chia seeds are evenly dispersed and start to swell. Cover and put cup in the refrigerator. Let sit overnight.
The next day, get your cup out of the fridge. Your chia seeds should be blown up in size and totally gelatinous. Your “water” should now be a thick gel.
Mix 1 cup of your chia seed gel with 1 cup of the juice of your choice and mix well.
I used the chia seeds I got from Wegmans and added an estimated three tablespoons (I do not have a tablespoon measure with me at school) to a cup of water. I then let it sit for eight hours. At this time with water was completely gelatinous so I stirred it up (there was a thicker clump at the bottom) and added cranberry juice.
desired consistency

When I first tasted it I noticed that the juice was really strong, the chia was clumpy and hard and tasted very strongly “seed like”. This discouraged me a bit, but I tried it again the next day, and success! I really would wait a whole day before consuming. The flavor of the juice and chia mellowed, there were no more clumps, and the chia was soft! Honestly, if you gave me this and a mamma chia, the only difference I could detect would be the different juice flavor.
Overall, this was a successful recipe. This recipe makes a drink exactly like mamma chias so if you don’t have access to the beverage, feel it’s too expensive, or just like adding your own flavors, try this recipe out!

A quick posing update (and apology)

I will just make this brief, but I'd like to give a brief apology and explanation as to why I posted so little this summer. Basically, I had a full time, unpaid, job disguised as an internship. Essentially, I spent like 400 hours this summer working and did not get paid for it. This meant that I was both perpetually tired and out of money. So, no new posts! But, this internship is now over and I have spent the time reviewing everything I bought this summer, and more, and currently have a basic twice a week queue of posts into October!
So, there will be posts on Tuesdays and Fridays in this current queue and I will be adding more posts as school progresses. School also means work, that I actually get paid for, so hopefully I will be able to pick up a few new items soon.
Thanks for sticking with me (or being a new reader!) and I hope you find all my posts interesting and helpful!
(And wish me luck in this semester! It's going to be a hard one but hopefully my queue will be enough to fall back on if the going gets tough!)

Review and Swatch: Essence lip liner in 11 In the Nude

The last time I was at Ulta I wanted to buy two Nyx products but also wanted to use my $3.50 of $10 coupon and found myself about a dollar short so I decided to pick up this nude lip liner from Essence since it was $1.50.

Recipe Review: “Magic” Chocolate Custard Cake

If you, like me, like to waste your day away looking at pretty pictures of food on pinterest, you have probably seen this recipe before. Oh, the infamous magic custard cake that separates into three layers! So, I had some free time and all the ingredients so I decided to give it a go. Below is an annotated recipe where I can provide some tips for the best cake.
Firstly, this recipe says it will take 15 minutes. Yeah no. This will take about three hours start to finish.
Ingredients:
4 eggs, at room temperature (they don’t actually need to be at room temp.)
1 teaspoon vanilla powder or extract
1 and ¼ cup sugar
110g butter, melted (this is equivalent to a stick aka 8 T.)
½ cup all purpose flour
⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups milk, lukewarm
1 tablespoon powdered sugar for dusting
Method:
Preheat oven to 320F (160C). Grease a 30cmx17cm baking pan (I used a square pan that is about 3” deep and either 8x8 or 9x9) and line it with parchment paper. (DO NOT line with parchment paper!!!!! I did this an the batter leaked under making my bottom layer uneven and making a lot of waste! Just grease it or line it entirely with paper like, up the sides which one large piece, no holes! This will make your corners uneven though.)
Separate egg whites and yolks. Beat egg whites in a bowl until stiff and put aside.
Whisk egg yolks, vanilla and sugar until creamy. (It will come together into a pale yellow paste)
Add melted butter and mix for half a minute. Add the flour and unsweetened cocoa powder. Mix with a spatula until incorporated well. Pour the milk gradually and continue beating.
Add in the egg whites, one third at a time and gently mix with a spatula. (do not “gently mix” whisk the egg whites until you see small flakes of the whites fully incorporated into the liquid. I’ve seen the appearance described as curd like. This is just liquid at this point anyway so it is impossible to fold.)
Pour this liquidy batter  (it’s literally the texture of milk) into the baking pan and bake for 60 minutes. (you are going to have to trust it is done because the toothpick test will not work. Touch the top with a finger. Feel like cake? Feels semi-sold and not like liquid under your finger? It’s probably done.)
Let it cool and when it comes to room temperature chill for an hour. (make sure it is very cool! May take over an hour.)
Slice it in the size you like and dust with powdered sugar right before serving. (You have to turn this out upside down to serve. The bottom layer is like pudding so it’s impossible to scoop out like that.)
Keep it in refrigerator until you finish it all.
my magical layers

So, what’s it like you ask? The top layer after baking is like the cross between cake and brownie. The middle layer is like a custard or pudding and the bottom layer is strange. It’s thicker like a sort of gelatin; it’s my least favorite layer.  In general though, it’s just okay. It is not that chocolatey or that sweet. Mine turned a light brown color, not a super dark rich brown. The textures are also weird for me. This is definitely a novelty cake not a “this is so delicious, I want this all the time!” sort of deal.

Overall, this recipe does work to give a three layer custardy cake. It is not amazingly delicious though and takes quite a lot of work and time for a mediocre flavor.

Review and Swatch: Wet n’ Wild Silk Finish lipstick in 537A Blind Date

Review and Swatch: Sephora X Explosive

While at my local Big Lots, I always look in their makeup section. Often times they have really nice makeup and nail polish that has usually been discontinued or has had a change in packaging. On my last trip I found some Sephora X polishes. The color that most intrigued me is called Explosive and just had to come home with me since it was only $2.

Review and Swatch: Butter London Posh Bird

Ever since I go my last (and first!) Butter London nail polish in Gobsmacked; I’ve been on the lookout for another. The formula, the nice shades, the cute bottle; all of it made me want another. I kept an eye out on 6pm.com where I got my last polish, but no colors that I liked went down to a good deal. So imagine my excitement when a lovely polish turned up at Marshall’s…

Another Life Update

So, I've been AWOL for a few weeks now and so I will explain. Basically, I am currently worked a full time job. A full time job that is technically an internship so I'm away from 6:30 in the morning until 5:30 at night working hard for no pay. This is physically, mentally, and emotionally tiring for me. I am typing all day so my hands also hurt and I don't feel like typing. I also have to write up what I did everyday because I'm taking this internship for college credits. I did not anticipate being this tired so I didn't have a long queue of posts. I am just starting to get used to this schedule and so hopefully will be posting more, but probably only two times a week.
In addition to my fatigue, since this is an unpaid internship and full time so I am not working a part time job this summer, I do not have the money to be spending on makeup like I do when I am getting a paycheck which is usually over the summer and during the school year. So instead, I hope to be writing other types of posts like baking/cooking posts with the occasional drugstore makeup item.
I hope you are looking forward to my future posts!
P.S. I also have a few videos on my youtube channel which I probably will not be updating much over the summer, but I have a full list of ideas for videos once I am back in my dorm so please subscribe!

Recipe: My Favorite Banana Bread

Something that I find oddly appealing is to watch the slow ripening of bananas. Maybe it’s because they ripen obviously; more obviously than other fruits. They go from green to yellow, and finally, to brown. Maybe it’s because I know I’ll get banana bread at the end of it. This following recipe is my favorite because it gives a moist and tender bread that is not too sweet but also doesn’t involve any weird additions (like mascarpone) that could stop a home baker from making it immediately.
The following recipe is adapted from: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/banana-bread-recipe.html

Review and Swatch: NYX Intense Butter Gloss in Berry Strudel

As soon as I saw the release of the NYX Intense Butter Glosses, I knew I needed to pick up the gorgeous purple color available. While I normally do not like glosses, these were advertised as being very intensely pigmented so I had to try them out. After quite a while of searching, I finally found an Ulta store that had this color in stock.

Review and Swatch: Kiss gel dress strips in Royal Flush

All pictures are after one day of wear

Every time I go to my local dollar tree, I always make sure to check out the beauty section and really advise everyone else to do so! You often find great discontinued or seasonal makeup and for only a dollar. Sometimes though, you figure out why something is discontinued when you try it out.
Lately, I’ve been really into nail decal and, after finding the Essie nail strips at the dollar tree which are fantastic, I decided to try out the Kiss gel dress kit. While it says it’s a gel kit, there is also an option of not curing with a gel lamp and so, I decided to try it out.

Review: Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

from google shopping

To make my concealer application easier, I decided that I wanted to apply it with a sponge. This meant that I could cover more areas of my face faster than if I just used my fingers. I, of course, would love to try the beauty blender, but at twenty dollars, I wanted a more affordable option. So, I looked around online to find the best dupe product and the general consensus seems to be this real technique sponge.
